It is Vula i Sevu! This is the climax of the year

It is Vula i Sevu! This is the climax of the year in the traditional Fijian calendar.

As the calendar centers the cycles of the uvi (yam, our noble crop), this is the time when uvi can be harvested, and is presented to the chief / the land.

This can be seen as a time to show the "fruits" of the unseen, or uncovered, in a way. It's our opportunity to expose what we've had underground, dig them up, and offer them back to the land and to feed our people.

What are you grateful for in this season? What have you kept underground, awaiting maturation, that is now in a season of harvest?

In Ever Uvi Community this month, our focus is "Roots Work". We are uncovering our "uvi" - our rooted work that is now ready for us to expose. Even if just to ourselves.

Those precious unconscious musings...our innate brilliance...that shows itself in feelings of intensity, procrastination, frustration, resistance.

We shine a light on those niggling, ripe and ready gifts this month, and we expose them - bring them to the surface, and offer them in gratitude to our communities, ourselves, our people with reverence for our nature that brought it here.

I went to nap, and woke in active waves, contractions. 3 hours later, with the heaviest of water fall outside...he arrived. 🍠 About Ever Uvi 🍠
In Fiji, the uvi (yam) is regarded as a “noble crop”. The entire calendar revolves around the root crop - with names of months referring to fishing and flowering seasons, correlating with uvi growth and harvest. The year’s climax, in February, begins with the uvi harvest that is presented to the chief.

Ever Uvi is a symbol of the all-year-round, environmental and interpersonal reorientation required in liberation of past and current impacts of colonization. How we do this in our business community, as an ongoing regular practice, has a significant impact on our economies, and our greater world.

Our programming now offers:

Florence Julian, Miss Hibiscus 1977 (my mum). The Hibiscus Festival has been running in Fiji since 1956, and is a 9 day long community celebration highlighted by the crowning of our beloved Adi Senibua - Hibiscus Queen.

She spent her reigning year travelling around the world as an ambassador for Fiji. Mum received loads of fan mail and proudly responded to every one. I have met Fijian women in my life who used to have posters of my mother on their wall as little girls! 🥹 "Your mother is Florence Julian?" they'd say - "Miss Hibiscus 1977 Florence Julian??" Yes, lol that's the one.

I stand by the word "selfish", too. Not "selfing". Not any reframing that precludes us from discomfort and guilt. No. The INformation required for the TRANSformation is that raw, unapologetic selfishness...and - while uncomfortable - it is the truth we need for that major transformation.

Powerful Pāsifika stories like these are a huge part of my process in business, life, creativity and all things. The fact these have been a source of medicine for our generations for thousands of years and forever onward is 🤯 to me.
